2012 Preview (Part One)

By Janice Ferguson
GPA Style Editor

In Chinese tradition, 2012 marks the year of the dragon. In golf apparel tradition, the new year of fashion kicks off at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 26-28.

What's new, fresh and exciting? Apparel company spokespeople were asked that exact question and provided answers as to what we can look forward to seeing, and purchasing, in the coming year.

• Ecco's Golf Street, the first hybrid sport-casual shoe, is now available with a textile upper that delivers maximum breathability and a chic aesthetic. The outsole features approximately 100 molded traction bars that provide more than 800 traction angles for grip in all conditions. The bars are constructed from TPU, making them last five times longer than rubber.

• Quagmire Golf's Both Ways reversible bottoms for guys and gals can be worn on one side, reversed or rolled up the hem to show both sides at the same time. The fun, striking plaid can be youthful or simple and conservative. The best part is that they are made from technical material so they work great for playing a round of golf, too.

• Fila Golf's Tahoe long sleeve sport shirt for men was created based on a retro ski look Fila golf designer Nancy Robitaille loved growing up. The zip turtle neck is incredibly comfortable and it's crafted from Single Jersey Moss, featuring a contrasting collar for added pop. This piece should prove to be a "go-to" item for chilly conditions on the course, wearing to the gym or running weekend errands.

• Arnie Intense Polo, named after The King's approach to the game, is classic Palmer style. This top is fully updated with modern cotton-poly quick dry blend and the Arnie logo on the collar. "Mr. Palmer was a real style icon back in the day," said Geoff Tait, creative director. "The concept we presented was to take inspiration from his wardrobe and inject with modern cuts and fabrics."

• Kikkor's Slyder golf shoe is a complimentary shoe option for a quick evening round or a trip to the local range. The simple canvas materials keep the shoes breathable and light while providing a price point that is both appropriate and affordable. "It's the only young looking slip-on golf shoe out there, it looks wicked awesome, and it will retail for only $59," said James Lepp, president and founder.

• G/Fore will launch the red, white and blue Liberty glove for the spring. With premium AA Cabretta leather in a precision cut and embroidered patch detail. The Liberty glove will be available for men and women, and will hit stores just in time for the U.S. Open - perfect for Father's Day gifting.

• Nivo's new Retro collection for women features quick-dry moisture wicking and UV resistant fabric with 1960s-inspired abstract placement prints that tie the color story together.

• Kentwool utilizes its nearly two-century-old heritage of superiority in textiles to create socks that draw upon wool's natural and cool performance fibers for moisture management, comfort and performance enhancement. For 2012, look for purple, blue and green being added to the men's tour profile sock, a wool compression sock, and the 19th Hole collection made from merino wools with patterns.

• AHEAD and Kate Lord's new sun protection apparel for men and women is a hot topic for the New Year. All fabrics are 100 percent performance polyester, which employ moisture transfer and anti-microbial properties as well as shields the skin with UPF 30. Styles include long and short sleeve tops, and plaid sun protection shorts will be in the line as well to offer a complete look.
