Who says all base layers have to be black or white? Layering pieces for cool late winter and early spring golf days can reflect the much-awaited season of color, and lift gloomy spirits to a brighter side.

With moisture wicking, antimicrobial and loads of comfort features, fashionable looking base layers perform during athletic tasks and take the bore out of boring.

• Sold as a ski base layer top, the Yellowman brand has teamed up with Athleta to create an exclusive line of athletic clothing for women, driven by the spirit of adventure that can be worn as a golf base layer top as well.

Featuring authentic art from real Maori tattoo artists, the lightweight, fitted piece is made from breathable, wicking silk-weight fabric that offers performance right against the skin. The Yellowman base layer has allover graphics with different prints at the front and back, and a turtleneck for warmth and to allow a peak of color to show from under the outer layer.

The Multi is available in sizes S-XL, and is on sale for $54.50 from $100, now online at
www.athleta.com.

• A leader in technical base layers, Under Armour's ColdGear long sleeve mock for men features a two layer brushed fabric that combines enhanced thermal protection and moisture transport. The compression fit supports muscles and increases circulation resulting in higher efficiency and increased stamina.

The 66 percent nylon/10 percent polyester/15 percent elastene ColdGear fabric contains anti-odor technology that prevents the growth of odor causing microbes, and 30+ UPF protects the skin from the sun's harmful rays and inhibits premature aging.

ColdGear mock is available in sizes S-XXXL, and comes in 15 colors, including sapphire blue, forest green, grey heather, midnight navy, sage, red and purple. It sells for $49.99 at www.underarmour.com.

• The first company to teach the concept of layering to the outdoor community, Patagonia came out with insulating long underwear in 1980, and reduced the number of layers needed to ward off cold temperatures.

The Capilene polyester line was introduced in 1985, and Patagonia has provided quality base layer tops and bottoms for men, women and children ever since. The kids' Capilene 3 crew is versatile, fast-wicking, quick to dry and is the perfect long-sleeved top for layering or wearing alone.

The 4.8 ounce 100 percent polyester (64 percent recycled) fabric is made with Gladiodor, a natural odor control technology. The soft, brushed interior provides insulation and the raglan sleeves with underarm panels accentuate mobility and there are non-chafing flat seams. A tuck-in-friendly drop-tail hem creates added warmth, and the rib neck makes it easy to pull over the head.

Unisex sizes range from XXS-XL, and is available in fog (light gray), sea pink and classic navy, and sells for $29.00 at www.patagonia.com.

Mizuno's Breath Thermo body warming technology fabric absorbs body moisture to generate heat. The fabric characteristically changes the moisture absorbed into heat - the colder the temperature, the higher the heat generating effect.

Breath Thermo has extremely high moisture absorbing power to control humidity and heat between the body and the outside environment. It is a buffer against sudden environmental changes. The antibacterial and deodorizing features the yarn itself having these functions to prevent odors.

The compression fabric and patterning combination is engineered on the concept of making muscles work more efficiently, expending less energy through muscle stability and reducing muscle fatigue.

The long sleeve Breath Thermo body mock takes basic black and kicks in gray panels and red top stitching for a modern, athletic look. It also comes in a blue/black color combination, and a quarter zip-style is available in men's sizes S-XXL. Visit www.mizunousa.com.
