Tips for Easy Holiday Air Travel

Where To Go Next!
Making plans to travel by plane this holiday season? Here are a few travel tips to help keep the season bright and to ease the holiday air travel hustle and bustle.
- Keep informed. Airlines are constantly making changes to their schedules and policies, including adding baggage fees. Take the time to research the changes by checking your airline's website.
- Check flight status. Many airlines provide instant flight status information through text-enabled mobile devises. Flight information is also available on airline websites.
- Pack lightly and carefully. Many airlines are charging now for checking baggage. But overhead bins are getting smaller and fuller, so what's a passenger to do? First, pack lightly. If you're going to carry on your bag, keep clothes to a minimum. If you're staying with family, you can always do laundry there. Pack clothes that color coordinate - for the holidays, we like black, white and red to mix and match with a few scarves as accessories. Second, pack carefully. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has a number of rules and regulations that keep changing, so read up on them online at www.tsa.gov. Remember though that the TSA will only permit passengers to carry on liquids, gels and creams in 3-ounce containers that fit in one quart-size clear plastic bag. Also, play it safe and leave presents unwrapped - and stay away from packing toy guns or anything that may look like a weapon. It can be confiscated. Be sure to put your contact information and itinerary inside any bags just in case they get lost.
- Check-in Online. To avoid long lines at the counter, most airlines allow passengers to check-in online 24 hours prior to flight time. So before you leave for the airport, check-in and print your boarding pass. Also take the time to choose your seat assignment. And remember, some airlines are now charging fees for certain, if not all, seats.
- Arrive Early. Lines may be long. So give yourself some extra time for bag checking and security checking.
- Bring Cash. If you're checking bags curbside, there may be a fee per bag. So bring some cash along to pay for the service. It also comes in handy for buying food or drinks onboard.
- Have Patience. It's a busy season, airlines have cut back on flights and weather conditions may create delays. So travelers need to keep all that in mind. It's better just to relax, go with the flow and make an adventure out of your holiday travels. If nothing else, it could make a good story to tell during your family's holiday dinner.
