Going green for spring

By Janice Ferguson

These days the phrase “going green” has more than one connotation. Referencing the color green, in general, stands for growth and life that is apropos to spring. The term can also represent wearing apparel in a variety of green shades or making an environmental statement.

We’ve doubled up on the meaning with our favorite fashion picks for spring that outfit you, protect you and remind you that our earth, along with its inhabitants, need a little help staying green.

* The Green Friendly Golf Co.’s golf belts have a divot tool and ball marker built right into the belt’s tip. Golfers will appreciate the convenience of having these tools easily accessible, and golf course maintenance crews will thank us for doing our part to improve the quality of the greens.

Founded in 2005, the GFG Co. is committed to developing a range of essential golf accessories like the belts, which are stylish and functional, but also encourage the essential etiquette on the golf course. Men’s and women’s styles are available — colors, sizes and prices vary.

* Verdina (which means “little green” in Italian) welcomes the season of new beginnings with a stretch cotton pique polo with dropped placket detail in a light greenish-blue called pool. Paired with its signature cotton stretch Bermuda short in clubhouse plaid is a cool outfit for any spring activity. Supporting the earth’s four-legged critters, Verdina sponsors the Eleventh Hour Rescue, a non-profit organization that saves dogs from death row, providing them with love and medical attention until they can find a forever home. (Polo, $69; shorts, $100).

* Callaway sprouts some green bling with its men’s stainless steel three-piece case timepiece featuring a green dial, chronograph, date function, luminous hand and hour markers, green polyurethane strap, and 10 ATM (or Atmosphere referring to the water pressure rating of a watch in meters, 10 ATM equals 100 meters). Sleek and stylish, each watch comes packaged in a fancy golf tin. Look for the Callaway caddies wearing this watch at the upcoming Masters. ($115).

* Burt’s Bees don’t pollinate but they will protect you from the sun with chemical-free sunscreen SPF 30. This 100 percent natural formula provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and helps keep skin hydrated without using chemical sunscreen actives. Instead, titanium dioxide, a naturally occurring mineral, creates a micro-fine barrier on the skin to reflect the sun’s harmful rays. The sunscreen is effective immediately upon application and safe for children. ($15 for a 3.5-fluid ounce tube).

Made from lightweight cotton knit, the cut is flattering on a variety of figures. The sleeves bell slightly, and there are 7.5-inch slits on both sides for added comfort. Available in sizes S-XL. ($170).
