StyleWatch - Fall back and spring forward with new golf footwear

By Janice Ferguson

The advanced strides in golf shoe technology are keeping a close pace to those we have come to expect from golf club manufacturers. No longer can we purchase a pair of golf shoes based solely on looks and comfort when they can do so much more.

Golf footwear companies want us to consider what we put on our feet as a piece of equipment -- just like a new hybrid, grips, putter or driver.

So we are going to take a look at some new golf shoes for fall, and a sneak peak of what to expect on the shelves next spring. If the performance enhancing features don't grab you, their athletic-inspired good looks and fashionable details will.

Fall 2007

Nike's Air Tour TW 8.5 model for men, which will be worn by Tiger Woods, is one of the new total performance shoes that combine Nike Air technology with Nike Power Platform technology.

The Air Tour TW has an improved heel fit system to prevent slipping, a total traction outsole that enhances both support and flex through the swing, a waterproof membrane to help keep feet dry and ventilated, and Q-LOK Scorpion spikes with directional resistance nubs to control rotational movement. (Suggested retail: $230)

For women, Nike's Air Zoom Spirit combines trendy patent stripe details with premium full-grain leather uppers, an encapsulated heel unit, full-length Poron sock liner, rubber power platform outsole and the Q-LOK system spikes. Three-color choices are available: blue/green stripe combo on white, brown/beige/pink/green stripes on white, and white hound's-tooth detailing on black with red swoosh. (Suggested retail: $155)

Etonic is taking comfort technology from its running shoe division and introducing it to golf with the new R-Series footwear featuring RCS (Resillient Cushion System). Located in the midsole of the shoe, RCS gives golfers longer lasting cushion, impact protection and energy return.

One of two styles with RCS, the R-Series GT, has a full grain leather upper with leather lining combined with Gore-Tex for waterproof protection and breathability. The footbed is moisture wicking, anti-microbial and removable. Featuring Goodyear's Multi-zone Traction System, the outsole has extended flex zones, longer stability bars and additional tri-directional pyramid turf grips for better traction.

The R-Series GT is available for men in four color ways, offering size runs of 7-14 medium and 7-13 wide widths, and come with a two-year waterproof guarantee.

(Suggested retail: $150)

FootJoy's new DryJoys feature an outsole that has seven strategically-placed TPU Stability Pods and an enhanced Optiflex zone that result in a more comfortable and stable platform. The outsole has been developed so that more of the shoe stays in contact with the ground throughout the golf swing.

The uppers have an ECL Leather system, full leather linings, and Comfort Plus PU Fit-Bed. There are 12 styles of the men's golf shoe to choose from, and the new DryJoys are already on the feet of PGA Tour players such as Zach Johnson, Chris DiMarco and Luke Donald. (Suggested retail: $160)

Spring 2008

Adidas fresh lineup will include new Powerband Sport and Tour 360 LTD shoes for men, and Powerband Sport for women. Both Powerband Sports models feature Powerband Chassis -- unique, cradling midsole frame to promote greater swing power and control. A water-resistant, membrane-lined mesh upper for temperature management also offers a contemporary, athletic shoe look.

The Powerband Sport insole has a fit-foam sock liner that conforms to the foot's contours, and GripZone helps lock feet in place during the swing, while clog resistant cleats improve grip and stability on the bottom of the shoe.

Men's styles will come in three-color ways, whole and half sizes, medium and wide widths. Women's will come in one color, whole and half sizes, and medium width. (Suggested retail: $120)

Puma's spring 2008 golf shoe collection was unveiled at the President's Cup by Sweden's Johan Edfors. The Swing GTX shoe will feature Smart Quill, Puma's newest technology.

The line focuses on stylish, smart and sophisticated tastes, borrowing inspiration from the 1950s. Additional information and pricing will be available at a later date.

Ecco distinguishes its 2008 footwear collection with labor-intensive manufacturing.

Performance enhancements to the women's Ace GTX and Casual Pitch Ribbon styles include hydrophobic-treated leather for weather-resistance; internal stabilizers; double-layered cushioned insole to reduce stress on the knees, hips and back; internal air-circulation system; an energy return system; and green-friendly outsole designs with molded traction bars combined with Stinger cleats and Q-Lok insert system.

The Ace GTX will be available in white/black/lava and white/silver/black. The Casual Pitch Ribbon is available in silver/white/black, sand/white/bison, black/white/melon, coffee/white/light rose, and titanium/white/raspberry fashion color combinations. (Suggested retail: $190 and $140 respectively)
