Think Pink

October has once again arrived and Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaigns are gearing up for their annual events. But how about instead of just thinking pink during the month, we do something pink in support of the cause.
According to statistics, the only thing rare about breast cancer would be if you didn't know of someone, either personally or remotely, who has been affected by the disease.
Every three minutes a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the leading cancer among white and African American women.
Breast cancer incidences in women has increased from one in 10 in 1960, to one in eight today.
For every million women screened with a mammogram test, a thousand lives can be saved.
In the professional golf world, we know many stories -Morgan Pressel, Cristie Kerr and Judy Rankin come to mind - in our personal worlds, even more. This issue of the Apparel Wire is dedicated to the numerous agencies and companies who offer education, support, and financial contributions to the effort of increasing breast cancer awareness and finding its cure.
Do something pink in October by logging on to any one of the following sites to learn more about every facet of the disease, participate in a golf tournament or walk/run, donate money, or purchase a product where proceeds go to supporting the cause.
Organizations
American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org/breastcancer): This website is devoted to breast cancer, answering questions about breast cancer and risk factors, while offering strategies for early detection, new diagnostic techniques and the latest treatment options.
It also provides a complete set of recommendations for detecting breast cancer early, emphasizing the need for women aged 40 and older to get regular annual mammograms. Select content is available in Spanish.
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (www.nbcam.com): The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month organization has been dedicated to increasing awareness of breast cancer issues, especially the importance of early detection, for more than 20 years.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure (www.komen.org): What began as a promise between two sisters, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.
As the face and voice of the global breast cancer movement, Komen for the Cure has local affiliates in 125 cities and communities, and advocates at the local, state and federal levels.
The website offers interactive tools such as an online audiovisual breast self-exam technique, and downloadable educational materials.
National Breast Cancer Foundation (www.nationalbreastcancer.org): The National Breast Cancer Foundation mission is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and providing mammograms for those in need.
NBCF has developed partnerships with medical facilities, associations and corporations across the country. Proceeds from its fundraising efforts, such as the annual Pink Ribbon Challenge, are distributed by the foundation to hospitals, clinics, missions and mobile mammography units that provide free mammograms for underserved women.
