In the final days leading up to the ballot-casting deadline, the tension was excruciating. Who would win? But also, who would lose?
Security was heightened as the votes were locked away in a personal e-mail folder.
But the tallies are finally in and we really did not need an independent accounting firm. That being written, just a comment about voting: First, thanks to everyone who was badgered into voting. Second, the percentages in each category were calculated reflecting only the number of votes per category, which means some voters chose not to cast an opinion.
Adam Scott and Tiger Woods shared the title as the PGA Tour's snappiest dressers, followed closely by Camilo Villegas. Fortysomething players Davis Love III and Fred Couples rounded out the top five.
On the flip side, Duffy Waldorf was a runaway winner as the PGA Tour's worst dressed player. Sergio Garcia, still smarting from his yellow on yellow sartorial choice for the British Open's final round last year, and Phil Mickelson, despite fashioning a more cut figure in 2007, tied for second.
Woods, Charles Howell III, Aaron Baddeley and Jesper Parnevik were the only players to receive votes in both categories.
As for personal choice, Polo was a clear-cut winner over J. Lindeberg, while Burberry edged Nike by a slightly closer margin. The sentiment against J. Lindeberg was that only the well-defined figures are cut out for the trendy style worn by the PGA Tour's young guns.
This fall will mark the eighth anniversary of Payne Stewart's tragic plane crash, but his image still resonates with readers. Nearly 60 percent of the votes were against players wearing plus-fours on Tour, while roughly half of those voters commented that Stewart's legacy was the reason.
Voters overwhelmingly did not mind Woods wearing red on Sunday and did take offense with Furyk wearing buttoned-up shirts. As well, the tightest vote came in the category of whether color affects a player. Those who voted yes, most often pointed back to Garcia's canary yellow outfit at Hoylake.
Best dressed PGA Tour player: Adam Scott (19.6), Tiger Woods (19.6), Camilo Villegas (12.5), Davis Love III (8.9), Fred Couples (7.1), Aaron Baddeley (5.4), Jonathan Byrd (3.6), Greg Norman (3.6), Retief Goosen (3.6), Geoff Ogilvy (3.6), Charles Howell III (1.8), Luke Donald (1.8), Chris DiMarco (1.8), Jesper Parnevik (1.8), Mike Weir (1.8), Harrison Frazar (1.8), Bill Glasson (1.8).
Voter comments: Adam Scott. Bright colors and close to the body cuts. And the body is in shape, that's key.
Worst dressed PGA Tour player: Duffy Waldorf (38.0), Sergio Garcia (8.0), Phil Mickelson (8.0), Jesper Parnevik (4.0), John Daly (4.0), Aaron Baddeley (4.0), Boo Weekley (4.0), Jim Furyk (4.0), Criag Stadler (4.0), Woody Austin (4.0), Ben Curtis (2.0), Ian Poulter (2.0), Charley Hoffman (2.0), Will Mackenzie (2.0), Tim Herron (2.0), Charles Howell III (2.0), Tiger Woods (2.0), Graeme McDowell (2.0), Kenneth Ferrie (2.0).
Voter comments: Mickelson, get some clothes to hide the man boobs. ... Pick any American. ... Phil Mickelson -- he wears a boring solid polo every day. ... Tim Herron -- his shape makes everything look unkempt. ... Graeme McDowell -- I know he isn't technically a tour player, but his clothes are too bright and are ill-fitting his figure. ... Where do I start? Baddeley, and anyone wearing J. Lindeberg or Munsingwear or tight pants. ... Too many to chose from. ... John Daly -- looks like a NASCAR with all of the endorsements.
J. Lindeberg or Polo?: Polo (71.4), J. Lindeberg (28.6).
Voter comments: Polo -- you need a certain build to carry off the Lindeberg well. Most PGA [Tour] players don't have that build, Jesper and Camilo notwithstanding.
Burberry or Nike?: Burberry (58.3), Nike (41.7).
Plus-fours on Tour?: No (59.6), Yes (40.4).
Voter comments: Not since Payne and never again! ... No -- only Payne Stewart can wear them. ... Nope -- sorry -- tradition is one thing, moving on is another. ... Certain traditions need to be remembered, and not seen. ... No, only Payne Stewart had the panache to pull it off. No current player is in Payne's league.
Tiger Woods in some color other than red on Sunday?: No (75.0), Yes (25.0).
Voter comments: Yes, any color other than red. ... No, that is his trademark. He does branch out every once in a while with a variation of red. ... Silver. ... Pink. ... Orange. ... Black. ... Yellow. ... No, it his signature, although colors have become variations of red, like salmon and fuchsia.
Jim Furyk's button-up shirts?: Dislike (56.6), Like (43.4).
Voter comments: Geek! ... On anyone else, dislike. The man knows his style. Unique like his swing. ... Sweetest thing around!! ... Nope -- buttoned up shirts scream "Nerd!" This is an athletic activity; look the part of an athlete, not an accountant. ... Love 'em.
Phil Mickelson in a visor or Tiger Woods in a hat?: Tiger Woods (71.4), Phil Mickelson (28.6).
Voter comments: Phil's visors create hat head, Tiger's got to lose the structured headwear. ... Both are bad! ... Hat; visors are for women. ... Both adorable. ... Ditch the visor Phil, visors are for male beach volleyball players. ... Phil has good hair, Tiger has a bald spot. Phil can wear a cap, but Tiger would need to sunscreen the dome to wear a visor. ... Cat in a hat. ... A visor belongs on the beach; a cap belongs on the baseball field.
Do the colors of a player's clothing affect his play?: Yes (50.9), No (49.1).
Voter comments: Yes, when he knows he looks like an idiot -- 2006 British -- Sergio! ... Does Sergio in that canary yellow outfit count? Yes; it's all confidence. ... I doubt it, unless they are given so much grief it starts to mess with their mind. ... No, well, maybe Serigo. ... Yes, it's been scientifically proven that colors affect moods, and moods affect play. Absolutely. Tiger is proof, if you need to look further. ... No, until he makes double bogey. ... Maybe for some players. I think Tiger or Vijay could play just as well in lederhosen, they are just so mentally strong.
Does Duffy Waldorf need a fashion makeover?: Yes (76.5), No (23.5).
Voter comments: Yes, and a swing make over too! ... No, he's great the way he is. ... No, it is part of his persona now. ... Yes, but it is Duffy's personal brand. If we gave him a makeover, he just wouldn't be Duffy. We need to leave that little tradition alone. ... Who cares! This is golf.
