Resort 2007

Resort wear - a.k.a., cruise wear or resort dressing. Whichever you prefer to call it, resort is considered a season in the world of fashion. It acts as a sneak preview into what we can expect to see on the racks for spring, and sold this time of year to those headed for warm, balmy destinations around the globe.
Some of us haven't even donned the new ski pants yet, and find it difficult to think about what will be in fashion three months from now. But the anticipation of light, fun, flirty spring apparel does evoke a cheery sense of, "We can't wait!"
Designer Karl Lagerfield created the Chanel Cruise Collection for 2007.
"The word cruise is a bit limiting these days -- it's really about travel," Lagerfield said, "and traveling is an act of freedom."
The varied lengths and silhouettes in his line portray his approach to a relaxed yet chic style. The collection has a lot of depth and variety -- you can find something for every situation, whether it's a holiday in the Bahamas or staying in New York.
At Dior, it's reported that 40 percent of total sales come from its resort line, so it's a big part of business, and it comes with a big name fashion icon. John Galliano, better known as "the Rocker" of couture designers, got his inspiration for the line from a London museum.
"I wanted to do something that was glamorous," Galliano said, "but done in a cool way. Uptown but not uptight. You'll see that in the cuts and ease of the clothes."
The Resort 2007 look is polished and plays with lots of texture and metallics. Splashes of reds and greens can be found with the familiar cruise ship staples of black/white and navy/ivory.
Gucci designer Frida Giannini describes her line as having a tranquil St. Tropez feeling.
"An ankle length dress that's good for a walk on the beach," she said, "but can easily move into evening and dinner is ideal for resort."
Her line also boasts a casual signature suit that is very versatile, clean and sophisticated.
Complementing the resort looks are oversized sunglasses, large totes and bowling bags, chunky jewelry, wide belts, and floppy hats. But designers caution women not wear too much all at once -- use accessories to highlight an outfit, not take the focus away from it.
Do you need to go to St. Tropez to get a top designer resort look? We wish we could tell you, yes, and then stow away in your steamer trunk, but classic resort wear is very easy to find this time of year at your local upscale boutique, major department stores and online shopping sites.
